Medicine Drums: Living Beings, Healers, Teachers
Floral Ark

I experience medicine drums as living beings - as healers, teachers and spiritual guides in their own right. They are not simply instruments; they carry presence. When you sit with a drum, you are entering into relationship.
The act of birthing your own drum is ceremonial, transformative and deeply uplifting. It marks the beginning of a sacred bond, one that often unfolds over years. As you stretch the hide, lace the frame and bring your drum into being with your own hands, something within you is also being shaped and strengthened. It is a process of alignment between heart and hand, intention and action, spirit and body.
Drums have been our allies across time and cultures. The steady beat mirrors the human heartbeat - the first rhythm we ever knew. There is something ancient and reassuring in that pulse. For women especially, the frame drum carries a long, powerful lineage. It has been a companion in ceremony, healing, prayer and storytelling for centuries. When you hold your drum, you are stepping into that stream of memory and continuity.
Your drum becomes your sacred partner for life. It listens. It responds. It teaches you how to listen in return. Through resonance, the drum helps restore balance. Its vibration travels through the body, gently recalibrating what feels scattered or depleted. The sound reaches beyond the thinking mind and opens a doorway into deeper awareness. Many people experience a renewed sense of hope when they begin working with their drum — a remembering that they are not alone, that guidance is available, that rhythm can carry them through times of uncertainty. Over time, your relationship with your drum can become a compass. When you feel out of alignment, you drum. When you need clarity, you drum. When you wish to give thanks, you drum. The rhythm brings you back to centre - back to your own steady heartbeat.
Birthing a drum is not just about creating a tool.
It is about reclaiming your rhythm.
It is about remembering who you are.
I work with great sensitivity and openness to guide you through the drum birthing process over one or two days, depending on what feels right for you. There is no rush. This is sacred work, and it unfolds best in spaciousness.
I am an animist, which means I experience the world as alive — imbued with spirit, interconnected and intelligent. When we birth your drum, we do so in deep reverence to the spirit of the animal and the tree who have given their skin and wood to become its body. Through ritual and ceremony, I help you reconnect with the Earth in a way that feels tangible and intimate. This is not symbolic — it is relational.
As you work with the hide and frame, you begin to sense the presence within it. We speak gratitude. We set intention. We invite peace into the making. Hope is woven into every knot and pull of the lacing. Your drum is created not just with your hands, but with your heart's prayer for alignment — for steadiness, for clarity, for renewed trust in your own path.
I only work one-to-one or with couples. This ensures the space is held with care, depth and full attention. The weaving of a person to their drum is an extraordinary experience. It deserves witnessing, gentleness and protection. In this held space, you are free to move at your own pace, to feel what arises, and to honour the sacredness of what is taking place.
As a community herbalist, I also work with plant spirit medicine to bless and imbue your drum. The plants are our allies in this process - grounding, guiding and anchoring intention. They help root the drum in healing and in hope.
My own path to this work has been hard won. I have survived near death, emergency spinal surgery, chronic migraines and chronic post-traumatic stress. I am neurodivergent, and for much of my life I felt out of balance in a world that did not always make sense to me. My search for peace led me first to our plant allies. The plants led me to the drum. And the drum became a powerful healing companion - steady, forgiving, constant.
Through rhythm, I found regulation.
Through ceremony, I found meaning.
Through relationship with the living world, I found alignment.
Now, I feel ready to share what I have learned, particularly with other women who are seeking steadiness, hope and reconnection. This work is not about perfection. It is about remembering your rhythm and trusting that even after difficulty, harmony can return.
You might ask yourself, why do I need a drum?
What I have learned, both personally and through the women I work with, is that the drum meets you exactly where you are.
All forms of drumming have the power to reduce stress and bring you fully into the present moment. The steady rhythm anchors you in the here and now. It can help lower blood pressure, strengthen immunity and gently regulate the nervous system. When life feels chaotic or overwhelming, the drum offers something simple and steady - a pulse you can return to again and again.
The drum has long supported us through life's thresholds: menarche, childbirth, peri-menopause, menopause, grief and loss. These transitions can feel disorienting, even lonely. The rhythm creates a safe space to simply be with what is changing. It builds personal power not through force, but through presence. It opens pathways to your own inner wisdom, the knowing that already lives within you.
When you drum, you begin to feel your strength not as something you have to prove, but something you embody. The vibration moves through your body, loosening what has been held too tightly. It clears mental fog. It rekindles hope. It reminds you that even in times of uncertainty, you carry your own rhythm of resilience.
Whatever calls you to birth your drum - curiosity, healing, transition, longing, or simply a quiet inner nudge - I will hold the space for you. I will gently guide and support you through the ceremony in the beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces at Floral Ark.
This is not just about making a drum.
It is about reclaiming your steadiness.
It is about remembering your power.
It is about choosing hope, and sounding it into the world with your own hands.
Birthing your own spiritual drum is a profound investment, not just financially, but energetically, emotionally and spiritually. It is one of the most intimate acts of creation you can undertake.
When you choose to birth a drum, you are saying yes to relationship. Yes to commitment. Yes to walking alongside a sacred companion for years to come. The process itself asks something of you - your focus, your intention, your patience, your care. It is physical work. It can be emotional work. And that is precisely why it is so powerful.
As you soak the hide, stretch it, lace it and bring it into form, you begin to feel the depth of the connection unfolding. There is often a moment — quiet and unmistakable — when the drum shifts from being materials in your hands to becoming a presence. That moment is extraordinary. It cannot be rushed or manufactured. It is earned through your attention and reverence. This is why the investment matters. You are not purchasing an object. You are participating in a ceremonial act of co-creation - honouring the spirit of the animal, the tree, the plants and your own intention. The drum holds your prayers from the very beginning. It carries your hope, your healing journey and your personal story woven into its body.
The cost of birthing your drum depends on the hide you feel called to work with and the type of wooden frame you choose.
Please note: The prices shown are based on a 14” oak frame with deer hide and a Celtic cross handle. If you feel drawn to a different size, an open-hearted style drum, or wish to honour another animal by working with a different hide, I am very happy to discuss this with you. Costs may vary accordingly.
Whatever you choose, this is not simply about making a drum.
It is about marking a moment in your life.
It is about choosing alignment.
It is about stepping into sacred relationship with courage and hope.
For your first drum, I gently recommend beginning with a 14” frame. It is beautifully balanced - large enough to carry depth and resonance, yet light enough to feel comfortable and responsive in your hands. It often becomes a trusted and steady companion.
All of the hides and hoops I offer are carefully and consciously sourced. I honour the life of the animal and the long traditions of natural drum making in every step of the process. These materials are raw, wild and full of character. No two are ever the same - and that is part of their beauty.
Natural markings, variations in thickness, small scars or subtle shifts in colour are inherent in wild, traditionally prepared hides. I do not see these as imperfections. They are the story of the animal's life. They are signs of authenticity and truth. When you work with a hide like this, you are entering into relationship with something real and lived. That depth brings power, presence and integrity to your drum.
Wherever possible, I prioritise UK suppliers, keeping the sourcing close to home and aligned with care for land and tradition.
Deer or stag carries a protective energy, particularly supportive for healing and journeying. There is a quiet strength in deer medicine - an aura of gentleness, sensitivity and attunement. It teaches us that softness and strength can coexist. Many women feel held and reassured by deer energy, especially during times of transition or vulnerability.
Oak is a teacher of leadership and inner authority. Oak asks you to stand tall and rooted. It supports you in stepping fully into your power — not in dominance, but in grounded confidence. Oak energy is steady, enduring and wise. When your drum is framed in oak, it becomes a reminder that resilience can be both firm and compassionate.
Together, these materials create more than an instrument.
They create a partnership — one rooted in strength, sensitivity and hope.
When you hold your drum, you hold a living story — and your own begins to weave into it from the very first beat.

By the end of our day together, you will leave carrying your drum, its beater and a small medicine pouch - along with clear care instructions and a waking meditation to help you continue building your relationship at home. But more than that, you will leave with a sense of connection, alignment and quiet hope that is hard to put into words.
The day unfolds gently and intentionally.
Heart-opening Cacao Ceremony
Cacao helps soften the edges of the mind and open the doorway to intention. It invites warmth, presence and sincerity into the space. As you drink, you begin to settle — arriving fully in your body and in the significance of what you are about to create.
An Altar to the Animal and Tree Spirits
Together, we create an altar to honour the animal and tree spirits who form the body of your drum. This is a moment of reverence. Of gratitude. We acknowledge that this drum is not simply materials - it is relationship. Through guided visualisation, you journey to meet the spirit of the animal and the tree, connecting with them in a way that feels personal and meaningful. This often becomes one of the most powerful moments of the day - a deep remembering that you are part of something greater and held within it.
Crafting Your Drum Beater & Small Medicine Pouch
You will craft your drum beater and a small medicine pouch — practical companions to your drum, made by your own hands. The act of creating them brings focus and calm. Each stitch, each wrapping, becomes an affirmation of care and intention.
Building Your Drum
This is where prayer meets action. As you soak the hide and stretch it over the frame, you weave your hopes, your healing intentions and your personal story into its body. There is something profoundly uplifting about feeling the drum take shape beneath your hands.
It is physical, grounding work — and yet it carries a spiritual depth that often surprises people.
You are not only making a drum, you are anchoring a new rhythm in your life.
Drum Blessing & Naming Ceremony
Once your drum has begun to dry and its voice is emerging, we hold a blessing and naming ceremony. Naming your drum seals the relationship. It gives form to the connection you have built throughout the day. This moment is often filled with quiet emotion - joy, relief, gratitude, even awe.
Closing Ritual
We close with ritual - gently sealing the work, giving thanks and grounding the experience so that you leave feeling steady and centred.
It is physical, grounding work — and yet it carries a spiritual depth that often surprises people.
When you walk away at the end of the day, you carry more than an instrument. You carry a companion. You carry a rhythm that you can return to in moments of doubt or difficulty. You carry something you have made with intention, reverence and hope.
And that changes you.
By the end of our two days together, you will leave carrying your drum, its beater and a small medicine pouch - along with clear care instructions and a waking meditation to help you continue nurturing your relationship at home.
But what you truly leave with is harder to measure: a renewed sense of steadiness, a deeper connection to the living world, and the quiet uplift that comes from creating something sacred with your own hands.
Day One - 10am to 12pm
We begin gently.
Heart-opening Tea Ceremony
Our first morning opens with a heart-opening tea ceremony. This is a soft arrival. A moment to pause, breathe and set intention. The warmth of the tea invites you into presence, into sincerity, into the awareness that this is not simply a workshop — it is a rite of passage.

Plant Meditation & Garden Walk
We then move into a plant meditation and garden walk, slowing our pace and awakening our senses. You will gather sacred herbs with intention - touching, smelling, listening - allowing the plants to guide what wishes to be included in your drum's bath. This gentle immersion in nature settles the nervous system and brings clarity to your purpose.
Sacred Bath for Your Hide
With the herbs collected, we prepare the sacred bath for your hide. As the water and plants come together, your drum begins its transformation. This stage is about infusion — allowing plant spirit medicine, gratitude and prayer to soak into the very fibres of the skin. It is a beautiful act of preparation, filled with quiet hope.
Day One closes with a sense of anticipation. Something has begun.
Day Two - 10am to 3pm
Heart-opening Cacao Ceremony
We begin again by opening the heart. Cacao helps soften the edges of the mind and open the doorway to intention. It invites warmth, presence and sincerity into the space. As you drink, you begin to settle — arriving fully in your body and in the significance of what you are about to create.

When you leave at the end of the second day, you carry more than a drum. You carry a rhythm that can steady you in uncertain times. You carry a reminder of your own strength and creativity. You carry hope - not as an idea, but as something you have shaped with your own hands.
And from that day forward, whenever you lift your drum and sound its heartbeat, you will remember: you are connected, you are supported, and you are never without rhythm.
I can create a workshop based on your needs. Workshop pricing is based on on 14" oak hoop and deer hide - but feel free talk to me about other options for your hide and hoop.

Working with Amanda was so much more than completing a physical task and going home with a drum. From the start, Amanda imbued the whole process with a sense of presence and purpose, and there were moments throughout the day-long workshop that were so focused and somehow ‘other’ that it really did engage my ‘self’ physically, emotionally and spiritually. The rest of the world, just for a short time, fell away from me and I was able to fully immerse myself with the task at hand. And at times it absolutely required my full and total attention - both with my body and my concentration. This in itself was such a welcome experience - being able to truly inhabit a space, with a purpose, without allowing the outside in, as it were. I left with much more than a physical object. A very special, sacred day. Thank you, Amanda. So very much. You hold space with such care and guide with clarity - and we still allowed for some laughter too! The setting, the preparation ahead of the drum making and the day itself - joyful. Amanda is a gifted and intuitive teacher - aka drum midwife. - Lynn From the moment you welcomed me into your spiritual space and abundant garden, I felt relaxed and nurtured . I was lucky to have 1-1 tuition where your wisdom and guidance made birthing my first drum a truly enriching experience. I never expected to feel such deep emotion. My drum is beautiful. I love her. Thank you so much Amanda. - Kerry: |
